We are very excited in our class to have friends in England! We are writing to another class in a school in England where Miss Law was a teacher. Before Christmas, we wrote letters of introduction to our partner class and found out a little about their school and what do they do each day. We are looking forward to continuing writing to our friends in England and learning about the similarities, and differences, between our two countries. We have learned these differences already:

Our class mascot, Lizzie the Elephant, looks after our classroom. But we have been wondering: what does she do when we're not here? Find out about Lizzie's adventure in the story we wrote together as a class... Miss L closed the door with a thump so big it knocked Lizzie the elephant, who was the class mascot and a soft and puffy stuffed animal, into the teal basket. Feeling startled, Lizzie wriggled and jiggled and squirmed until the basket fell to the floor. She bounced onto the carpet, raised her trunk and exclaimed, “Kaleidoscopic Kiddoes!” and with an explosion she was alive!
It felt good to be alive, but she wanted some friends to share her adventure with. Lizzie looked at the door, wondering, and then she nodded her head. With another bang, the Gruffalo, Trigger and Hedwig woke up too. “Let’s have a party!” Lizzie said. The toys danced and partied and had fun. But, in their excitement, the Gruffalo danced too wildly and they knocked everything off Miss L’s desk, making a huge CRASH! All of a sudden, the door handle started to turn and in walked Mr Edwards… Lizzie and her friends froze. Mr Edwards rubbed his eyes, feeling worried. He thought he might be dreaming. But then, the Gruffalo couldn’t stay still any longer and he coughed. With big eyes, Mr Edwards leaned forward and saw that the toys were alive. “Are you really real?” he wondered, even though he already knew that they were. The next day, Mr Edwards told Miss L what he had discovered, but she didn’t believe him. Until, later that day, she heard a little voice say hello… For a few weeks we have been learning all about how to solve problems in Math. We have been learning that there is more than one way to solve a problem. Some of us like to use the counting on method, others like to use Tens Frames. We can use all we know about break-aparts and Partner Houses to help us too. And then, we can think like a froggy and hop along a number line!
All the different strategies we have learned are helping us to solve number and word problems. We can even write our own word problems now, and solve problems with more than one step. We are working together to share our new knowledge and having a great time while we do! Just ask us about frogs and equation chains, and we'll tell you just how much we have learned in Math so far! Thursday September 15th was Open House at Washington.
This was my first ever Open House, as schools in England don't have Open House events, and I enjoyed it so much. We talked about our STAR behavior expectations, discussed what we will be learning this year in Second Grade, and even met Lizzie the Elephant, our class mascot! A BIG thank you to all who came to our classroom on Thursday - we hope it was informative and enjoyable for all of you! Miss L |
